ISN Webinar: Challenges in implementing PD preferred/first policies across the globe
- 2 PM CEST
Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) offers a cost-effective, patient-centered alternative to in-center hemodialysis, yet its adoption remains limited globally. This ISN webinar explores the complex challenges of implementing and sustaining PD-preferred or PD-first policies through contrasting global experiences. Drawing on real-world insights from Thailand, South Africa, and Western Europe, the session will examine barriers including health system infrastructure, reimbursement models, training gaps, and patient perceptions. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how tailored strategies- such as urgent-start PD, assisted PD, and robust education- can overcome these challenges and drive sustainable change toward equitable home dialysis access worldwide.
Learning objectives:
- Analyse the systemic, clinical, economic, and sociocultural barriers to implementing PD-preferred or PD-first policies across diverse global health systems.
- Compare and contrast the real-world experiences of PD policy implementation in Thailand and Western Europe, with emphasis on lessons learned, sustainability, and strategies for policy reform.
- Identify actionable interventions- including training, infrastructure, reimbursement, and patient education- that can facilitate greater uptake and retention of Peritoneal Dialysis as a preferred modality of kidney replacement therapy.
